Literary Device: Alliteration

Alliteration is when a series of words start with the same letter or sound*. Authors use alliteration to add “sparkle” to their writing. Alliteration also helps us to remember something more easily.

We can find alliteration in the “real world” too. Check these out: PayPal, Coca Cola, Dunkin’ Donuts, Marilyn Monroe, Ronald Reagan

*an interesting bit of trivia: only repeated consonants count as alliteration. Repeated vowels do not.

Watch this video on alliteration. You don’t have to watch the whole thing, but watch at least the first minute.

 

Pick a Project: (Choose 1 or more)

 

1. Wizard Travels: In these chapters, Harry travels by Floo powder for the first time. Invent a new way for wizards to travel. Describe your new form of magical transportation in one of the following ways:

• create a video commercial

• make a print ad for the Daily Prophet

• write a letter to the Department of Magical Transportation describing your new invention and requesting permission to market it

2. Magical Clocks: Explore real-life versions of the Weasley’s famous clock here and here. If you like, make a drawing or model of your own clock showing the places you’d most likely find members of your family.

3. Recreate The Burrow: Use the links below to learn about where the Weasley family lives, then make a model or drawing of the Burrow.

4. Gnomes, Gnomes Everywhere: Read about garden gnomes. If you like, choose one of the following:

• Draw a picture or make a model of a garden gnome

• Reread page 36-37, then use this template to write instructions on how to de-gnome a garden.

5. Wizard Comics: Ron’s favorite comic strip series is called “The Adventures of Martin Miggs, the Mad Muggle”. Use this template to create a comic strip about Martin Miggs.

6. DYO (Design Your Own) Do you have a really good idea for a project or craft to go along with the reading? Go ahead and do it!
