 Something to Talk About

 Reading:

 Read chapters 1, 2 and 3

Literary Luminary:

Pick out a part from the reading you want to share. It could be interesting, very important, fun to read, scary, captivating…anything you want. Be ready to share the part you chose and why you chose it. Record on your Something to Talk About sheet.

Crystal Connector:

Choose something from the chapters that reminds you of your own life, another story, or a movie you’ve seen. Be ready to share. Record on your Something to Talk About sheet.

Word Wizard:

Find a word in the chapters that you think is: interesting, strange, silly, fun to say, fancy, or new to you. Share the word, the sentence you found it in, what the word means, and why you chose it. Record on your Something to Talk About sheet.

Pick a Project: (Choose 1 or more.)

  1. Family Portraits: Draw a portrait of Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia, or Dudley (or do all three in a family portrait!)

  2. Extra! Extra! Record a newscast or write a news article describing the strange events that people notice taking place on the day the story begins.

  3. Dear Diary: Choose one of the strange, inexplicable things that have happened to Harry while living with the Dursleys. Write a diary entry about it from the point of view of Harry or Mrs. Dursley, or write a dialogue between Mrs. Dursley and Mr. Dursley discussing the incident. (pgs. 24-25, 27-29)

  4. Design Smeltings School: Using the information on pg. 32 and your imagination, create Smeltings School. What would its motto be? What kind of students would it accept? What kinds of courses would be offered? What would the headmaster and teachers be like? What rules and discipline would it have? Find a creative way to share this (make a brochure, record an advertisement for the school, make a picture of it, etc.)

  5. Birthday Present Fails: On pg. 43, we learn that for Harry’s last birthday he received a coat hangar and a pair of Uncle Vernon’s old socks. Make a list of the presents you think he might have received for birthdays 2 – 9.

  6. DYO (Design Your Own) Do you have a really good idea for a project or craft to go along with the reading? Go ahead and do it!

Be ready to share at least one project during out next meeting!
