Find a word in the chapters that you think is: interesting, strange, silly, fun to say, fancy, or new to you. Share the word, the sentence you found it in, what the word means, and why you chose it. Record on your Something to Talk About sheet.
Pick a Project: (Choose 1 or more.)
1. Do You Know the Password? In these chapters, we find out that “Wattlebird” is the current password to get into Gryffindor Tower. However, the password will need to be changed each month. Make up Gryffindor’s passwords for October through June.
2. Hogwarts Math: Can you use the following information to figure out the total number of students who attend Hogwarts?
-
The 2nd year Gryffindor boys are Harry, Ron, Neville, Dean and Seamus
-
There are the same number of 2nd year girls as boys
-
There are the same number of students in each year of Gryffindor as there are in year 2
-
There are the same number of students in each House.
3. Howler Horrors: Students at Hogwarts live in fear of receiving howlers from their parents. Can you come up with something new for parents to use to keep their children in line? Remember, it’s got to be just as effective as a howler!
4. Magical Me: In his first class, Gilderoy Lockhart gives the students a quiz to see how much they know about him. Make up a quiz all about YOU, and then give it to a friend or family member.
5. Pixie Problems: watch this video clip showing what happened when Lockhart released Cornish Pixies in his Defense Against the Dark Arts class.
6. Lockhart Lore: Read what J.K. Rowling has to say about where Lockhart came from, what House he belonged to, and what exploits he got up to while at Hogwarts.
7. DYO (Design Your Own) Do you have a really good idea for a project or craft to go along with the reading? Go ahead and do it!
