Course Description

In this course, you will explore how to write a detailed physical description of a character that includes a key “signature” feature that makes the character instantly recognizable.

Week 1, students will work through a multi-media presentation to learn about how J.K. Rowling writes physical descriptions and utilizes signature features. They will also read excerpts from Rowling’s books that exemplify this.

Week 2, students will choose an actual character from the series who is mentioned but not developed. Using guided planning pages, they will plan the physical characteristics and signature feature of this character. Once complete, students should upload this to the instructor for feedback. Feedback will be provided in written form.

Week 3, students will write a first draft describing their character and submit it to the instructor for feedback. First drafts should be submitted via Google Docs. Once the first draft has been submitted, the instructor will utilize the editing feature of Google Docs to provide feedback. Each student will also receive a personal video with instructor feedback.

Week 4, students should use the feedback they received to revise their pieces. Final drafts should be submitted to the instructor via Google Docs. The instructor will provide additional feedback via Google Docs and a personal video.

Choose Your Pathway

Pathway 2: F.R.O.G (Formal Regimen Offering Grades):

Learners who choose this pathway will receive feedback and grades for their work.

Learners should be familiar with the first three books in the Harry Potter series in order to be able to engage in the writing assignments.
