What’s It About?

Some of the best math lessons don’t come from a textbook — they come from a bag of jellybeans, a pizza box, or a Hershey bar waiting to be split fairly. This is fraction learning you can actually taste.

Bigger, smaller, or right in the middle

You’ll start by getting a feel for where fractions live — is this piece bigger than half, smaller than half, or exactly half? You’ll test that idea two ways: once by sorting things into groups (like jellybeans by color), and once by looking at shapes and areas (like slices of a pizza). Comparing the two will help you see that a fraction isn’t just a number — it’s a relationship, and once you can spot it, you can spot it anywhere.

Putting fractions in their place

From there, you’ll take fractions with all kinds of different denominators and figure out how to line them up from smallest to largest — no common language required, just an eye for size and a willingness to compare. You’ll build a fraction number line to make the pattern visible, and start noticing something sneaky: different-looking fractions can secretly be equal. A cookie split into fourths and a cookie split into eighths might have more in common than you’d think.

Making a whole out of pieces

Once you’ve got an eye for equivalent fractions, you’ll put that skill to work — building real (or pretend) pizzas topped with different fractions of toppings, dividing Hershey bars into equal shares and comparing the pieces, and figuring out how different-sized fractions can combine to make one whole cookie, one whole pizza, one whole bar. Along the way, you’ll start adding fractions together — some with matching denominators, some without — because by then, you’ll have the instincts to know what “matching” means.
