What’s It About?

It starts with a sound wave.
Before a song can move you, it has to travel — through air, through your ear, into a brain that’s built to catch it and make sense of it. This course starts right there, at the very beginning of sound itself, before following that thread all the way into some of the biggest questions in neuroscience.

From there, things get emotional. You’ll explore why certain chords give you goosebumps, how your brain decides what counts as “your kind of music,” and what’s actually happening neurologically when a song makes you cry, dance, or feel understood. The harmonic series, emotional intelligence, the strange alchemy of turning feeling into sound — it’s all in here.

Music isn’t just something you feel — it’s something that can help you heal. You’ll dig into sound therapy for anxiety and stress — the actual mechanics of how certain frequencies and rhythms can calm a nervous system down. From there, you’ll explore the powerful effect of music therapy across a multitude of physical challenges, from chronic pain to brain injury — reaching patients of every age, from premature infants in the NICU to those living with dementia and Alzheimer’s. You’ll discover that music is far more than entertainment — it’s a powerful tool that hospitals, therapists, educators, and researchers are using in some pretty remarkable ways.

And then there’s what music does to a brain over time — how learning an instrument reshapes it, how rhythm and music intersect with child development, how music and math turn out to be secretly related, and (because why stop at Earth) what scientists have discovered about the music of the planets.

Along the way, you’ll hear from the researchers and musicians who study this stuff for a living, listen to the music itself, and try out demonstrations that let you feel the science instead of just reading about it.
